Detox with Beets Recipe

One of my recent favorite foods are Beets!

In fact, growing up in Japan I have never eaten one until very recently.
Now I love the taste of them, but more than that the nutritional value they can offer.

I did 7-days detox cleanse with 2 other girl friends together a few weeks ago. It goes like this: first 2days are fasting. Just drink water with organic lemon squeeze throughout the days. 3rd day to the 7th day, you can eat smaller portion of organic fruits smoothies, brown rice, miso soups, organic vegetables and such. During this time, no products with sugar, flour, meats, dairy, and of course no junk food.

I was introduced then to try Beets which very well go with detoxing your body. I’ve never eaten one before and no idea how to cook them..!
So, I tried baking and boiling them other time.

After the 7days cleansing I was allowed to eat wheat, so here we go. I name this Couscous Beets Rock Salad.

This recipe totally uses the whole Beets and not just the roots, but skins, stems, leaves, and even beets boiled water. A whole Beets unwasted!!

Boil 3-4 Beats in a small pot for 30 min or until tender.
Don’t peel the skin (skin is eatable and nutritious!), but chop them in cubic and marinate them with small amount of honey. Set aside. Don’t drain, but keep the boiled water.

Chop the stem and leaves, onions and carrots  in small pieces and stir fry them with small amount of oil (or I like using coconut oil).

Cook 2cups of couscous with the Beets boiled water. After couscous is done, mix with stems and leaves. Garnish with salt and pepper.

Decorate the dish with Beets on top.

Also,  here is the Beets stems Miso Soup :)

6 Benefits of Eating Beets

“One Meal a Day Diet” makes your body healthier than ever..?!

Today, I am introducing you about this book which I have been wanting to read since it was published a few years back in Japan. I finally got it since my sister in law brought it for me from Japan!

The title of this best selling book is called “Eat only one meal a day. Being Hungry Makes You Healthy” written by Dr. Yoshinori Nagumo who is a 4th generation medical surgeon. He has been “practicing” one meal diet for the past 10 years. By practicing this diet he looks in his 30’s, but his real age is close to 60!!

He explains that eating one meal a day and while feeling hungry for a period of time activates the gene called Sirtuin which is a life-governing gene only active when the stomach is empty. With a recent research this Sirtuin gene was found to scan and repair all damaged cells and genes through out our body which also prevent body from getting sick and it has an anti aging effects.

In modern times, we eat 3 meals daily out of regular habit then we eat even when we are not hungry. Dr. Nagumo believes that this is rather harmful to the human body to be in the constant satisfaction. Today’s 4 major disease of Diabetes, Cardiac Disease, Stroke, Cancer all have roots in unhealthy life style with over eating.

Today, obesity is a serious modern disease we witness all around us. Why is it so hard to lose weight? Because losing weight doesn’t happen over night and it is a process and it is a self-discipline. With his method of diet, you eat one meal a day without restriction. As your body gets improved and healthy you will naturally crave nutrients that your body really needs and start loosing unnecessary weight and your skin will also progressively grow younger.

Dr. Nagumo 37 Years Old, and Now 57 Years Old!!

His concept of this meal plan was a shock to me at first, but I suggest start eating in smaller kid size plate or start with  “Stomach 80% Rule” then eventually have your body accustomed to being more “emptier stomach.” This applies to whether you are over weight or not. Please always listen to your body and take necessary action.

Like I have mentioned in the previous blog, being always hungry can mean an imbalance in Chinese Medicine. Stressful Eating, anxious eating, and other emotional eating can be alleviated and balanced with acupuncture. In that case please also come get treatment at Japanese Acupuncture, then we can help you achieve your goal easier.

“Stomach 80% Full Principle” – keeps doctors away

Today, I would like to introduce you one concept of Japanese secret to longevity and healthy life. This is the “Hara Hachibun-me (腹8分目)” or “Stomach 80% Full Principle”. We say “An Apple a Day Keeps Doctors Away” in America. In Japan we also say, “Stomach 80% Full Keeps Doctors Away”.

Japanese are known to have one of the highest numbers of longevities in the world.
The concept is practiced by many from ancient times. It is very simple, but harder to be done for many: don’t eat until your stomach is full (and happy). Last article I wrote about how Acupuncture can help reduce weight; Lose your weight with Acupuncture, but this “80% full” concept applies for not just for the over weight, but for all of us.

The benefits of leaving some space in your stomach

Moderate eating and keeping your meals light can cut calories, reduce fat intake, improve blood sugar level, and all of them in which can help achieve your weight to your own optimum and adequate level. Cutting calories help anti aging in cells in our body which helps prevent cancers, cardiac disease like high blood pressures, stroke, heart attacks, and diabetes and many other modern diseases caused by our diets and life style today. Just imagine the outcome of cutting 20% of your meal every time consistently!?

This principle has a deep root in Japanese culture and the way of maintaining one’s health I have found many studies conducted by researchers to monkeys and other animals.
Between the two groups of animals (one with unlimited food intake, other with limited calories and light food intake) one group fed with light meals not only lived longer, but also had much few incidents of getting diseases, and had longer and healthier living period.

Below monkeys are both 27 years of age. Right side had carol-ristricted diet

So, how do we know when our stomach is 80% full? There is no measure, and doesn’t have to be so exactly. Finish your meal when you know “I am close to getting full, and want to eat some more…” This can be a discipline for some, but body will eventually get acquired to the habits of eating lighter meals with practice.

You are what you eat

We have learned that not only the types of food we are eating affects our body, but amount of food we are taking in. Food is an energy source to our body, but also too much of it can be harmful and affect our metabolism, digestive system, and our overall well being. For those who need to eat because of stress and anxiety, Acupuncture can help. It can relax your body and mind, so that you no longer have to try to alleviate your stress by over eating. Lose your weight with Acupuncture!

The problem of obesity is a serious issue all around us today.
Does acupuncture really work to lose weight…? The answer is “Triple yes!!” Yes for the most part. I am going to write from my own experience of treating current and past weight loss patients, with two major categories.

I find one of the biggest reason of being over weight is caused by much of wasted water accumulation inside of the body. The fluid is not eliminated properly and has no where to go when the body’s water mechanism is sluggish. It can be caused by numerous factors like stress, unbalanced diet, weakened Kidney/ Liver, perspiration and diuretic malfunctions and so on.

However, here is a good news. Acupuncture can help to move that water. Move the excess wasted water out of body by promoting the movement of Qi and which in effect let the body eliminate the wasted water by means of urination and sweating.
This way so far, I have seen patients easily shed some pounds (4-6 lbs and more, depending on how over weight) in just one month of weekly treatments!

‚¨ƒfƒuI notice that while there are many “Water type” obesity patients there are also other types of obesity such as “Hard muscle – kind of a wrestler” type. This “Hard muscle type” that used to have more muscle density but now turned into fat in contrast take more time to lose than the “Water type”, because the weight is in the fat between the muscles. While relaxing the muscle such as with electro acupuncture and “Japanese Acupuncture Muscle Toning Protocol” the weight also has to be controlled by the way of diet and exercise by the patients. This is why for the “Hard muscle type” it is a process, but we can certainly work it out together.

Having said that though here is an interesting research article by Pubmed!
Use of Acupuncture is more effective than sit-ups?

So, what acupuncture do for the weight loss is simply by “balancing the system”. Balancing by regulating the water flow throughout the body,  balancing and strengthening each organs and muscles to function their best.  If if comes from stress-emotional-overeating Acupuncture can calm the mind and spirit aspect together, so you can handle the daily tasks and not try to handle the stress by eating. By treatment of emotional aspect you will notice that you can be nice to yourself and all the people around.

It is known that there are multiple other health risks of being over weight such as cardiac disease, depression, knee pain, back pain, infertility, diabetes and other health problems. Finally, we can still have edema and accumulation of water fat in tummy or lower body whether we are over-weight or not. If you easily get sock marks on your ankles, or feet get cold and puffy or else where you should consider treatment before it gets worse!

What is Japanese Acupuncture?

Hi there! Thanks for dropping by!

Since moving to Austin and started my new life here, I have decided to start my blog to introduce various health tips of Eastern Medicine, and what I believe work and wish to help many others. I am not a professional writer, but like to be true and personable, and will try the best I can. So, please stay tuned!

Why Chinese Medicine? Why Acupuncture? Why Japanese Style?
My practice is Japanese Style Acupuncture, which is a one style of Acupuncture originated from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) thousands of years back.
Every Acupuncturist learns fundamental TCM, but there are many styles of Acupuncture in the world. I get questions from patients “What is the difference of Chinese and Japanese Acupuncture?” So, as a start of this blog this might be a good article to introduce to those wondered and interested.

The main difference of Chinese and Japanese Acupuncture is the way of diagnosing the imbalances in patients. The most important part of Chinese Medicine is all about good flow of Qi & Blood through out the body. Where there is any stagnation within the body you start experiencing the aches and pain, GI issue, anxiety, depression, irritability to name a few. Stress or accidents can be a great deal in start creating the bad flow inside your body, and/or individual can be susceptible to change of weather or sensitive to change of seasons and different things that they consume, ex sugar, cold/hot food, dairy etc.

We as Chinese Medical Practitioners asses the condition of patient as we take your pulse, look at tongue, to find out what is going on in your body while taking intake and listening. The unique part of Japanese Style is that we also rely on the abdominal palpation and directly get to ask the body what is not balanced and what has to be treated in order to start moving the stagnation. Palpation based Japanese Acupuncture can instantly provide diagnostic information that reflects the whole body and can provide me a complete picture of how your systems are functioning overall. Among with so many different styles of Acupuncture today this is what I chose that works the best for me and for my patients, because this is a pretty amazing stuff!
